The Bali region is an area rich in customary law values ??and needs to be explored, fostered, and developed in order to enrich the national legal repertoire. In order to explore, develop and foster these customary law values, it is necessary to prepare experts in the field of law. The basis of this idea is the direction of the thoughts of Law Scholars in Bali who are gathered in the Association of Indonesian Law Scholars (PERSAHI) Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge to the Presidium of Udayana University.
The thoughts and proposals of the Bali Branch of PERSAHI Indonesia received a positive response and support from the Presidium of Udayana University in its meeting on Tuesday, July 7 1964, which took place in the meeting room of the Faculty of Letters, Udayana University. The Udayana University Presidium meeting with the Deans of the Faculties at Udayana University decided to open the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge within Udayana University starting in the 1964/1965 college year.
The realization of the results of the Udayana University Presidium meeting with the Deans, was determined by the Preparatory Committee for the Establishment of the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge in the Udayana University Presidium Decree Number 933/Sek/X/UNUD/1964 (Appendix 1) dated 24 July 1964, with the following personnel structure:
Purwanto Sastroatmodjo, SH; Vice Chairman III of the Presidium of Udayana University, as chairman and concurrently member;
Drs. I Wayan Rendha; Secretary of Udayana University as secretary and member.
Adrinudin Salim, SH; Attorney at the Denpasar District Attorney, as a member;
Th.K. Suraputra, SH; Judges at the Denpasar District Court as members;
Suwondo, SH; Army Prosecutor of the XVI Udayana Military Command in Denpasar as a member.
The committee has the task of preparing everything related to the opening of the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge, Udayana University starting from the 1964/1965 academic year.
The Presidium of Udayana University in realizing the establishment of the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge on August 26, 1964 submitted an application for approval to the Minister of Higher Education and Science (PTIP) in Jakarta to be able to issue a Decree on the Establishment of the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge, Udayana University Denpasar, through Letter No. 939/PS/X/UNUD/64.
In the application letter, two things were stated as the basis/reason for the establishment of the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge, namely:
Udayana University which originally consisted of four faculties (Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry and Teacher Training and Education), since July 23, 1964, it has only had three faculties (Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry) because the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education since that date has been transferred from Udayana University to the Teacher Training and Education Institute of Malang;
There was a decision of the Udayana University Presidium meeting with the Deans at Udayana University on 7 July 1964 regarding the Establishment of the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge.
Based on the request of the Presidium of Udayana University, the Minister of PTIP issued Decree Number 98 of 1964 dated August 26, 1964 concerning the Establishment of the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge of Udayana University in Denpasar (Appendix 2). In the decree it was stipulated that "Starting September 1, 1964, the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge of Udayana University in Denpasar was established with a note that for the time being until 1965 the costs of its implementation were outside the responsibility of the Ministry of Higher Education and Science".
With a decree above the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge, Udayana University, on the third anniversary of Udayana University on September 29, 1964, Brig. Jen.Prof.Dr. Sumantri Hardjoprakoso, Assistant Minister and on behalf of the Minister of Higher Education and Science. In his remarks he stated among other things: "……… finally on this occasion on September 29, 1964 on behalf of His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education and Science, I inaugurate the opening of the Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge which immediately became the State Law Faculty under Udayana University".
In its development in 2017, the Faculty of Law, Udayana University managed 4 (four) study programs, namely: Bachelor of Law Study Program, Master of Law Study Program, Master of Notary Study Program, and Doctoral Study Program of Legal Studies.
